Botox Before the Holidays: How Far Ahead Should You Book?

It happens every holiday season. The party is Saturday, it's already Wednesday, and Botox suddenly sounds like a great idea. The trouble is that Botox doesn't work overnight, and when you book matters almost as much as the treatment itself.

What happens after your appointment

Botox takes a few days to start working. Most people notice the first changes somewhere between day three and day five, and the full effect usually settles in at around two weeks. Until then, your lines are still softening, and your face can look a little uneven while everything catches up.

Bruising is the other thing to plan around. Not everyone bruises, but a small mark at an injection site can take a week or so to fade. Concealer handles that at the office. It's less fun in family photos.

Why we suggest three to four weeks

Booking three to four weeks before your event gives Botox time to reach its full effect and leaves room for a follow-up visit. At about two weeks, your provider can see how your muscles responded and add a small amount where it's needed. Any touch-up then has its own week or so to settle before the big day.

If this is your first time, give yourself the full four weeks. You'll find out how your face responds without a deadline hanging over you.

A simple holiday booking calendar

Work back from the date that matters most to you:

•         Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26): book by about November 5.

•         A mid-December office or holiday party: book by about November 19.

•         Christmas (Friday, December 25): book by about December 3.

•         New Year's Eve (Thursday, December 31): book by about December 10.

Your own calendar gets fuller from mid-November on, so it helps to book before it does, even if your event still feels far away.

The rest of the day after treatment

Your provider will give you aftercare instructions. The usual advice is to stay upright for a few hours, skip hard workouts for the rest of the day and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area. Hold off on facials and other face treatments for the next couple of weeks unless your provider says otherwise.

Questions to ask before you book

1.       When will I see the full effect, and when should I come back for a check?

2.       Is a touch-up part of the follow-up visit?

3.       Is there anything I should avoid beforehand to lower the chance of bruising?

4.       If I have other treatments planned before the holidays, what order makes sense?

Physician-led care

Baltimore Aesthetics is led by Dr. Onyebuchi Ogbuagu, a board-certified physician and founder of Baltimore Wound Care and Aesthetics Group. Every Botox plan starts with a look at how your face moves, your medical history and the result you're hoping for. You can read more about our injectables on our services page.

If there's already a date circled on your calendar, mention it at your consultation and we'll help you work back from it.
